I’m afraid I don’t understand the joke. Are you willing to enlighten us perhaps?

    • Stanislav says:

      Dear Daniel,

      Explanation here.

In Russia during the “roaring 90s,” the stereotypical instrument of torture was the soldering iron, inserted into a handy orifice. The victim will usually reveal bank passwords, locations of valuables, safe combinations, etc. long before the iron reaches full temperature.

This was common (and picturesque) enough that many non-technical Russians – those who never have occasion to solder anything – still mentally associate the tool with just this purpose.

      Yours,
      -Stanislav
